On Tuesday 28th October the grade 3/4's participated in a hands on science session.

The students explored and tested a number of experiments which helped them to understand how various materials can be used to create other materials such as plastic. They learnt about materials that are sustainable and why others are not.  There was great excitement and interest in these sessions, with lots of questions and activities. Turning a liquid into a solid to craete a bouncy ball was a highlight!

Integrated Unit- This term our unit is called “Let’s Do It Together” This unit focuses on the setting up of routines, processes and expectations for the coming year. As part of this unit, we also address the MSPS values and how these can be demonstrated in our classrooms, specialist classes and the playground. Information Night

Thank you to all the parents who attended our recent information night. We hope you gained some valuable information and that any questions that you may have had were answered

Netbooks

There was great excitement in the 3 /4 area last week when the netbooks were distributed. The grade 3 netbooks will remain at school for the moment and we will advise you when students will be able to bring them home. Please ensure that all the necessary paperwork has been returned to school.

The grade 4 children will be bringing their netbooks and charger home later in the week. Please speak with your child about looking after them. The netbooks need to be charged at home. They are an important learning tool and children need to be responsible for ensuring that they are ready for use each day.

Homework

Homework has begun this term and it is pleasing to see how enthusiastic the children have been about completing it. Children are expected to read each night for 15-30 minutes and record the title of the book and the number of pages they have read in their student diary.

Children can read books from the classroom, our school library or the local Mill Park Library, or books which they have at home. This year we have included a section which focuses on the spelling pattern of the week. This is designed to assist children to remember the spelling pattern and make links to their reading.

CHILDREN ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR CHOOSING THEIR BOOK AS WELL AS CHANGING IT.

Children also practise their spelling words each night. using the LOOK, SAY, COVER, WRITE, CHECK strategy. The maths homework sheet is discussed and explained before it goes home on Monday. It is then due back on Friday.  If children do not bring their Homework on Friday, they will complete their homework at lunchtime. Of course, we know that, at times, children are unable to complete their homework due to family commitments. Please put a note in your child’s homework book if this is the situation for you. We ask that parents sign their child’s homework each week, as well as their reading diary. Please encourage your child to complete their diary and sign it when you have seen it.

Swimming

Swimming will begin in week 3 of term 2.  Permission forms will be sent home shortly.

Toilets

Please let us know if your child has any medical conditions that require him/her to visit the toilet more frequently than normal

Communication

Please ensure that you read all the notes which come home as this is an important way for you to be informed about what is happening in our school.

Please do not hesitate to speak to your child’s teacher if you have any concerns so that the issue can be addressed.

Thank you

Grade 3 /4 team 2013

TERM 3, 2012

This term our unit is called “Australia and its Multicultural Society” Throughout the term the students will look at the contribution of various cultural groups to our way of life. The children are also working on a “country” project at school. This focuses on a country which is competing in the Olympic Games, but also has a connection to their family, eg where their grandparents were born.  As the Olympic Games began on July 27 a major focus of the unit will be on these activities. As part of this unit the students will complete 2 mini projects at home, one which focuses on a particular sport and the other which focuses on a particular athlete. Our studies relating to the OLYMPICS, will also include a 5-A-SIDE SOCCER workshop which will be run by FOOTBALL AUSTRALIA FEDERATION and our students will be involved in a wonderful GALA EVENT - CHAT TO CHAMP, live from LONDON. Students will get a chance to speak to athletes competing in London which will be hosted at our school by the Olympic Gold Medalist - BROOKE HANSON.
